“If you think safety is expensive, try an accident” said the Chairman of Easy Group.

Recent figures support his view – 250 employees and self-employed people are killed in the average year as a result of accidents in the workplace; a further 150,000 people sustain injuries that mean they are absent from work for over 3 days.

Over 2.3 million cases of ill health are caused or made worse by work, according to the Labour Force Survey, and over 40 million working days a year are lost through work-related injuries and ill health, at a cost to business of £2.5 billion.

Costings show that for every £1 businesses spend on insurance, there are uninsured losses of between £8 – £36.

Clearly, there are good financial reasons for reducing workplace accidents.

But, sadly, accidents occur in the workplace, and whilst there are legal and insurance requirements for reporting them from an OH&S perspective the aim is to identify causes and prevent repetition.

This ability to learn from workplace accidents reduces the number of accidents and leads to improvements in working conditions and methodology, making it an important component of a strong OH&S Strategy.
